JR: Dr. Jill, I hear you took a little trip over the holidays.
Dr. J: Yes, I went with Anna Matteo to visit West Virginia.
JR: That sounds like fun! Did you drive together?
Dr. J: Yes, and all the way we sang that song, “Take Me Home, Country Roads!”
JR: Wow! And you’re still friends? That’s a long time to be singing one song.
Dr. J: (Laughing) Yes, of course! And I thought of what great lessons we can teach with it, too!
JR: Let me guess. I think the song uses special writing techniques known as literary devices. Is that right?
Dr. J: Correct. One of them is metaphor – comparing two things without saying “is like.” Let me give you an example. The song begins, “Almost heaven, West Virginia.”
JR: That is saying that West Virginia is like Heaven, a good place. It’s a metaphor because the writer wants to compare West Virginia to the best place possible.
Dr. J: But the important thing to remember is that metaphor does not use the word “like.”
JR: Are there any other metaphors you found in the song?
Dr. J: Yes, how about this one: “West Virginia, mountain mamma, Take me home, country roads.”
JR: The writer is comparing the mountain to a mother.
Dr. J: I think that’s because the mountain is welcoming and familiar like a mother. You know, John we use metaphors all the time, not just in songs and poetry.
